What is Raspberry Pi? Uses and Computer Learning Projects

The Raspberry Pi computer is a powerful and affordable tool for teaching your child or students about coding and computing. But there are a lot of common questions about how to use the Raspberry Pi, which models are right for which uses, and what types of learning projects can work best for teaching and learning. We're here to answer some of those questions with simple, straightforward guide.

To get started on how to use the Raspberry Pi computer check out the FAQs below!

What is a Raspberry Pi?

A Raspberry Pi is a mini, low-cost computer designed to help kids learn the basics of computing and programming. Its small size makes it useful for many different projects. The Raspberry Pi looks very different from other computers; it comes without a case, so you can see its microchips and circuit board.

What is the Raspberry Pi 3?

The Pi 3 is the latest version of the Raspberry Pi computer, and the best to use when getting started and learning how to program. The Pi 3 comes with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and has many ports.

Some ports are for inputs, and others are for outputs. Inputs, such as a keyboard and mouse, allow you to control the computer and make it do what you want. Outputs, such as a monitor and speakers, let you know what the computer is doing.

What equipment do I need to use a Raspberry Pi?

A Raspberry Pi is easy to use, but it needs the following accessories to get it up and running:

A keyboard
A mouse
A monitor or TV
A microSD card and SD card adapter
A micro USB power adapter
An HDMI cable

You will also need access to a computer with an SD card reader and writer.

What are some good Raspberry Pi projects for teaching computing?
