This summer, the creative forces at Disney and Pixar will release their latest animated adventure Finding Dory in theatres nationwide. We're so very thrilled to finally return to the ocean to revisit the beloved cast of Finding Nemo and learn what new adventure awaits. To celebrate, we're bringing you up to speed with these five things you need to know (or refresh your memory on) before seeing Finding Dory in theatres this June.
Taking place one year following the events of Finding Nemo, the new film will bring us up to speed on the cast of characters since we last saw them, and how their previous rescue mission across the ocean forever changed their lives. We're really excited to finally catch up with our long-lost friends after this time and find out what they've been up to since we last saw them on the big screen.
When Dory suddenly experiences visions of her childhood memories and family, she decides to set out on a journey (with Marlin and Nemo at her side!) in a search to uncover more information about her past. Dory's quest reunites her with childhood friends who help Dory find out more about herself and her family. It’s great that we finally get a deeper look into Dory’s backstory and we’re excited to see what else we learn about this delightful character.
In February of 2016, Pixar co-founder John Lasseter explained that the inspiration that brought the story of Finding Dory into production was conceived by a single moment in Finding Nemo. Moments after Marlin meets up with Dory for the first time after Nemo's capture, Dory explains that she suffers from “short-term memory loss”. Though it might be taken as a fun throwaway line, it actually sparked the story idea for Finding Dory.
Of course, you can't have a film following Finding Nemo and not include some of the beloved cast and crew of the original. Although Pixar doesn't quite want to share all its surprises, we currently know that some characters, including Marlin and Nemo, will of course be making their way back, but there are also a few surprises along the way. Some of those surprises include Crush and Squirt the turtles, and Mr. Ray. It'll be great to see all these new characters back on the big screen, and we're filled with curiosity at how they'll all play a role in the story.
When Finding Nemo was released, it was an impressive visual juggernaut for its stunning, vibrant colours and use of animated technology to create realistic-looking water and ocean inhabitants. With the technical advancements that have come since the first film, Finding Dory is sure to take the achievements accomplished with Nemo and push it even further. We're thrilled to see how Pixar will push beyond the boundaries of their previous work once again.
Now that you're up to date with everything you need to know, only one thing left to do! Check out our brand-new Finding Dory: The Essential Guide to learn all there is to know about the new film and beyond, and be sure to catch Finding Dory when it hits theatres June 17th, 2016.
